Arundhati Bhattacharya: Profile, Husband and Family

Arundhati Bhattacharya is an Indian banker and financial expert. She was the first woman to ever to become the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SBI. According to the 2016 rank of Forbes, she was the 25th Most Powerful Woman in the world. Obviously, Arundhati is a name to reckon with in the Indian business world. She was also considered for the coveted posts of RBI Governor and SEBI Chairman.

Arundhati had replaced Pratip Chaudhary, another Bengali and quite an inspiring banker, on 30th September, 2013.

She was given a fixed tenure of 3 years – the first time in the history of SBI. It means that she will retire on 30th September 2016.

Profile of Arundhati Bhattacharya

Arundhati was born in Bhilai. Her father Mr. Prodyut Kumar Mukerjee was working with Bhilai Steel Plant as an Engineer. Her mother Ms. Kalyani Mukherjee was a Homeopathic doctor. After spending childhood, she was shifted to Bokaro, Jharkhand. Her mother started to practice Homeopathy here. She has done her schooling from Bokaro – St. Xavier’s School. After schooling , she took admission in Lady Brabourne College in Kolkata for BA in English Literature and later went to prestigious Jadhavpur University, Kolkata for MA (Eng. Lit.). This is the educational qualification of Arundhati Bhattacharya. It is quite surprising that the CMD of the largest lender of India has no MBA degree/diploma. However, it must be underlined that not having any MBA degree has not come on her way as she has always been a star performer in a variety of roles at SBI.

She had joined SBI as a probationary officer – PO – in 1978 and since then has donned many roles. She was also admired throughout business world for giving new identity to the SBI. Further, she was instrumental in launching many new and highly successful projects at the SBI, including SBI General Insurance, SBI SG Global Securities Services and SBI Macquarie Infrastructure Fund, among others. She had attracted attentions while transmogrifying SBI into a customer sensitive bank replete with latest technological innovations, like Mobile Banking.

Husband and Family of Arundhati

As mentioned Arundhati’s father was a SAIL employee and her mother was a homeopathic doctor.

She married Pritimoy Bhattacharya who was also an Engineer. Pritimoy had later joined IIT – Kharagpur as a professor. The couple has a daughter named Sukrita who was born in 1995.

It was really tough for the couple to look after their daughter. It becomes even more problematic because both of them were working at different locations – one was in Kharagpur and the other was in Mumbai. One of them was required to sacrifice career and Pritimoy decided to do that. He left job at IIT Kharagpur and started to look after Sukrita. Arundhati Bhattacharya had also said in an interview that the credit for her success goes to her family, particularly her husband and daughter, who were very understanding and with their immense support she could climb the ladder of success. Pritimoy has since become a software professional and has launched an IT company based in Kolkata.

  2. Respected Madam,
I am Srinivasa Rao , a Pensioner from Hyderabad.
As per e Circular PBU 1205/2012-13, dated 4th March 2013, payment of higher interest rates is allowed st staff/ pensioners , In respect of deposits made under SBI CAPITAL GAINS PLUS Accounts.
But the facility of payment of higher interest rate to Staff/Pensioners has been
Withdrawn in terms of e Circular PBU 724/2015-16 , dated 7th Sep 2015.
By withdrawing an existing facility Pensioners are most affected as interest rates in general are low.
These deposits are not treated at least at par with other TDRs as staff and Pensioners get benefit of higher rates of interest.
The deposits are huge amounts and if higher interest is not paid , the deposits may go past our
    Bank.
As many Pensioners after retirement sell their houses and buy better houses , they are put to disadvantage as they are deprived of higher interest rates at least for two years during the period of deposit.
Bank may not be in a disadvantageous position by continuing the facility, as it is permitted till 2015. The higher interest rate is however continues with other deposits of the Bank.
I request you to please show consideration for the Pensioners and continue the facility ofhigher interest rates to Staff/ Pensioners in vogue as at Sep 2015.
It will be a great help to Pensioners.
Pardon me for taking your precious time.
